White/Orange Cotton Kantha Quilt

This charming folk piece is a collector’s item. It is an increasingly rare example of a traditional village Kantha quilt hand crafted from older textiles. The embroidered flowers are colorful and animated on a white ground with an orange border. The back is a printed green and white cotton. It captures the spirit of the women who crafted it.

As women use their embroidery skills to create items to generate income for their families, fewer village quilts are being made for personal use as this one was. From the personal collection of a good friend in Kolkata, it will add charm to your collection.

Kantha embroidery is traditionally practiced by Bengali women to recycle old cotton saris and other garments into superbly stitched and decorated all purpose wraps. This embroidery is characterized by small running stitches that create a series of dotted lines. Usual Kantha motifs depict the gods and goddesses, animals, flowers and geometric patterns of classic epics such as the Ramayana. Most importantly, Kantha is considered an essential female creation expressing the eye, emotions, and skill of the women who embroider them.
